Leadership for the Fire & Emergency Services

Please note, this course is undergoing maintenance; users may experience technical difficulties. Updates should be complete by May 13.

This class is designed to give the participant an overview on leadership in the fire and emergency services as well as tips to help them succeed in leadership roles. Developing strong leadership in fire and emergency services begins with understanding personnel's unique challenges in these roles. This includes exploring key leadership principles and strategies that address decision-making under pressure and effective team management. Providing practical tools and actionable insights ensures leaders are prepared to navigate complex situations confidently.

Fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptability is essential. Leaders should engage with tailored lessons that emphasize crisis leadership and real-world applications. By prioritizing these skills, fire and emergency services personnel can enhance their leadership capabilities and drive meaningful outcomes in their professional environments.

In this course, you will learn:

  • How to recognize the differences between autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire leadership styles and when to use each to lead your team in fire service situations effectively.
  • How to set clear and realistic expectations for your team to improve accountability, enhance performance, and make your leadership role easier.
  • How ethical leadership and emotional intelligence can strengthen team morale, improve relationships, and help retain firefighters in your department.
  • How to assess your own leadership style, identify areas for improvement, and take actionable steps to become a leader your team respects and trusts.
