Every year, emergency responders are injured or killed while operating on or near roadways. This NVFC webinar, presented by Jack Sullivan, CSP, and Lt. Brady Robinette, will highlight critical strategies and standards aimed at improving responder safety in roadway environments. Topics include national statistics on struck-by-vehicle incidents, an overview of ongoing data collection efforts by Emergency Responder Safety Institute and Federal Highway Administration, and best practices for addressing highway median crossover hazards. The presenters will also explore the importance of interagency communication and collaboration through TIM Committees, as well as new developments in helmet and head protection standards. This session is essential for responders committed to improving scene safety and survivability.

Lt. Brady Robinette

Brady started his career in the fire service as a volunteer with Wolfforth Fire &EMS 18 years ago. In 2011 he joined Lubbock Fire Rescue full-time and currently serves as a Lieutenant. Additionally, he serves on Lubbock Fire Rescue’s Traffic Safety Committee. In the wake of a struck-by-vehicle incident in Lubbock, TX, he authored an October 2020 Fire Engineering Magazine article titled “Roadway Incident Operations - What helmet is right for the job?”. Brady serves on the ASTM E54 Protective Helmets Worn by Pedestrian Roadway Workers task group.

Jack is a subject matter expert on roadway incident operations and emergency personnel safety and promotes proactive strategies and tactics for protecting emergency workers from being struck by vehicles. He was a volunteer firefighter and chief officer for 23 years and in 2018 retired from a 40-year career as a safety and risk management consultant for the public and private sector. Jack teaches Roadway Incident Safety & Survival Workshops for emergency responders for ERSI and he is a Master Instructor for the FHWA SHRP2 Traffic Incident Management Train-the-Trainer Workshops. Jack is also a Technical Member of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and currently serves as the Chair of the Task Group for Chapter 6i of the MUTCD – “Control of Traffic Through Traffic Incident Management Areas”.
